Today I had a weird issue with a Microsoft IIS web-server. The latest .NET Framework was correctly installed and registered on the server, but when I put my .NET code in the web directory and browsed to it from a remote browser I got the standard .NET error page. I would get the error regardless of whether I was trying to access a page served by .NET or a basic HTML page hosted on the server. I confirmed that IIS was working correctly by removing all files (including the web.config file) from the web-directory and putting in a basic test HTML page on its own. The test page rendered correctly from a remote browser.

Having put the .NET code back in, I browsed to a .NET URL locally on the web-server in order to get a full view of the error message. The rather strange error was as follows:

I found this article on stack overflow which helped me to solve the problem. The answer was simply to clear down the %TEMP% folder, which for me was C:\windows\temp. Apparently, if there are more than 65,535 files in there .NET is not able to serve web-pages through IIS. There were hundreds of thousands of files in the folder so I couldn’t even browse to it using Windows Explorer. It ended up being a command prompt job:

Text truncation at a word boundary using C#

Following on from my last post on stripping HTML from text using C#, once I had removed all signs of HTML from the incoming text, I was also required to show a short preview of the text. I originally went with a truncation method, as follows:

This works, but the results look a little odd if the truncate happens half-way through a word.

Instead, I came up this method to truncate at the first word break within the allowed number of characters:

Stripping HTML from text using C#

I recently had a situation where I needed to show some text received in HTML format as plain text. This is the method I now use for this purpose, implemented as an extension method:

The method RemoveDoubleSpaces was also needed, since after replacing HTML elements with empty space it is possible to end up with multiple empty spaces where a single space would do. This is quite a useful method in its own right, hence separating it out.

Classic web-page layout with HTML and CSS

I met up with a great friend of mine the other week for our monthly “tech-talk” session, in which we share things we’ve learned or heard about in the IT world. We hold these sessions in order to give ourselves the illusion that we are actually managing to keep up with the ever-changing world of IT, and of course to enjoy some good banter and real ale.

We started talking about the layout of web-pages, and why using tables for anything other than an actual table is a bad idea. (If you don’t know why it’s a bad idea, ask someone with a visual impairment for their thoughts on the matter…)

I promised to share with my mate how I would go about creating a classic header/columns/footer web-site using only divs and CSS. Here is the result:

Although you’d probably use something like Bootstrap to achieve this kind layout these days, especially if you wanted it to render nicely on mobiles, it’s good to be able to build this kind of layout from scratch as well. The secret to getting it working is in the floats, and if you use the Web Developer toolbar by Chris Pederick to turn off CSS as I mentioned in a recent post about Firefox add-ons, you can see that the underlying HTML is a simple set of divs, one after the other.

I’ve tested this layout in the following browsers and all looks good:
